About the role
Maidstone Borough Council is seeking an independent co-opted member of our Audit Governance and Standards Committee. This a vital role in ensuring that we maintain the Council’s high standards of governance and financial probity.
The Committee of which you will become a member has the task of monitoring governance, including the code of conduct, and overseeing the financial and risk management framework. Having an independent member, working alongside elected councillors, will give the Committee a broader perspective and help it to be effective in its role. The Committee meets five times a year.
You are likely to have experience of financial or audit management, and to be familiar with governance issues, whether in the public or private sectors.
About Maidstone Borough Council
Maidstone Borough Council is the largest borough council district in Kent, with a population of 185,000. The Council’s gross revenue expenditure is around £100 million, and it has an ambitious capital programme, worth around £400 million over the next ten years. The Council has a strong financial track record, and it holds a healthy but not excessive level of reserves.
About you
The successful candidate for the position of Independent Member of the Committee will have a background and appropriate experience of financial / audit management and governance issues. They will have a good understanding of governance, risk management and control and will be able to act with integrity, objectivity and discretion. They will have an ability and willingness to analyse complex information, question, probe and seek clarification so to come to an independent and unbiased view.
You should not:
- Have been a member or employee of the Council at any time during the last 5 years.
- Be a relative or close friend of a member or officer of the Council.
- Be engaged in any party-political activity.
- Have any significant business dealings with the Council.
Selection process
A panel comprising the Committee Chair, Vice-Chair, Director of Finance, Resources and Business Improvement and Head of Mid-Kent Audit will carry out interviews for the role and select a candidate for approval by the Committee and recommendation to the Council for co-option.
