Job Details
This is an exciting time to join the Diocese of Oxford.
With over 1,000 churches, schools and chaplaincies across the Thames Valley, we are one of the largest dioceses in the Church of England with significant influence and ambition across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Our dedicated staff work collaboratively with parishes and clergy to deliver a wide range of strategic and operational support of mission and ministry for the sake of God’s world. The diocese has equity investments of over £100m, property and land holdings of about £400 million and annual income and expenditure of around £30m.
As our Director of Finance, you will have a critical role in the strategic leadership and financial sustainability of the diocese.
Reporting to the Diocesan Secretary, you will lead the diocesan finance team to ensure that the service, processes, policies and systems align to provide the Diocese with the assurance and insight required to support thriving mission and ministry. Robust reporting, strong financial forecasting and excellent stakeholder engagement are key tenets of this ambition. As a key member of the senior leadership team of the Diocese, you will also play a critical role in broader strategic decision making, as a role model for our values, and in supporting and advising our Diocesan Secretary and other senior leaders.
You will be an experienced financial leader and qualified member of a recognised accountancy professional body, able to blend technical skills with a track record of effective strategic and people leadership. You will have strong relational and communication skills to enable you to engage with stakeholders in our committees and parishes.
While you do not need to have worked within the Church of England previously, you will need, with our help, to learn quickly its structures, culture and dynamics. As a key senior leader in the diocese, you will be a Christian with an active faith and comfortable leading in an environment where reflection and empathy underpin our work. (Schedule 9, paragraph 1 of the Equality Act 2010 applies).
We want our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion for all to be reflected in the composition of our staff. We are particularly keen to receive applications from candidates from communities currently underrepresented at senior levels in the diocese.

WHO WE ARE
The Diocese of Oxford is the Church of England in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
The diocese sits between the Cotswolds in the west and London to the east, and extends from tiny rural communities to the vastly different cities of Oxford and Milton Keynes.
There are 810 churches in our diocese – more than any other diocese in the Church of England. In many ways, the best description of the diocese is that it is the family of the 55,000 or so regular worshippers in these churches.
The relationship between Church and state in this country means that every one of the 2.4 million or so people who live in our area has a parish church. So even if you are not a regular churchgoer, if you live within the Diocese of Oxford, welcome. The Church is there for you.
