Supporting the Head of Finance, this a critical role leading the financial accounting function and delivering the Council’s statutory accounts including all technical accounting and audit requirements and relevant government returns.

Whilst closing the accounts is the critical part of this role you will also be instrumental in improving business controls and processes. Managing a team of 3, the role also has responsibility for tax including VAT, Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) and property and land taxes. You will also keep abreast of, understand, and apply relevant legislation, statutory and professional guidance, best practice and directives as they relate to policy and financial accounting and management.

The ideal candidate will have qualified CCAB, CIMA or AAT with several years post qualification experience of closure of accounts and statutory financial reporting, gained in a local government or emergency services setting. However, consideration will be given to candidates who are able to demonstrate that they have transferable skills and an understanding of the unique nature of local government finance reporting. You will also have the drive to find service and process improvements and the desire to maximise the use of technology across a wide range of financial processes.

You must also be committed to providing excellent customer service and have very strong IT skills including Excel.
