We are looking to recruit a Principal Accountant with previous local authority accounting experience who is looking for a career development opportunity to join the Council’s Accountancy team.  The successful applicant will have a specific responsibility for the preparation and monitoring of the Council’s Capital Programme and for accounting for the fixed assets.

You will be a CCAB qualified or part qualified accountant with the ability to manage both the day to day operation of both the Council’s treasury management function and its financial information system.

You will also play a key role in the management of the closedown process and preparation of the annual accounts which includes liaising with the external auditors.  You will also have a working knowledge of CIPFA’s professional codes of practice covering local authority finance and accounting in particular those affecting both capital accounting and treasury management.

You must also have the ability to analyse complex financial information and have the necessary skills to explain this to a range of different stakeholders.  Experience of using fixed asset accounting software would be an advantage.

The Council offers a flexible working scheme for employees to help maintain a suitable work life balance whilst at the same time maintaining service needs.  Although the role is normally based at the Town Hall in Ripley, the Council is supporting hybrid working arrangements for office-based employees subject to business needs.

The Council offers excellent working conditions including a generous holiday entitlement and access to the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Amber Valley is one of the largest boroughs in Derbyshire with a population of around 128,000. The main centres of population are based around the market towns of Alfreton, Belper, Heanor and Ripley.  The Council has a demonstrable track record of sound financial management, achieving its savings targets and delivering a balanced budget and has a robust approach to its medium-term financial planning.

It has not, however, been exempt from the financial challenge faced by local government in general and is therefore required to pursue a budget deficit reduction plan which is to be delivered by 31 March 2024.

For an informal discussion about this role and the opportunity it offers please contact David Fox, Financial Services Manager on 01773 841675.

The closing date for this vacancy is 5 June 2022 at Midnight

(Any applications received after the closing date will not be accepted)

Shortlisting will take place week commencing 6 June 2022 with interviews being held week commencing 13 June 2022 onwards.

CV’s are not accepted.
