We are looking to recruit a Chief Accountant with previous local authority accounting experience, who has the ability to manage the Council’s Accountancy team in providing customer responsive and cost-effective financial management service to our stakeholders.

You will be a CCAB qualified accountant with the ability to lead the preparation of the Council’s annual revenue budget and its medium-term financial plan, and have extensive experience of budget monitoring for a range of complex services.

You will also play a key role in the management of the closedown process and preparation of the annual accounts which includes liaising with the external auditors.  You will also have a working knowledge of professional codes of practice covering local authority finance and accounting.

You must also have the ability to collate and analyse information, think creatively and achieve practical solutions to day to day problems.

The Council offers a flexible working scheme for employees to help maintain a suitable work life balance whilst at the same time maintaining service needs.  Although the role is normally based at the Town Hall in Ripley, the Council is reviewing alternative ways of working for office-based employees subject to business needs.

The Council offers excellent working conditions including a generous holiday entitlement and access to the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Amber Valley is one of the largest boroughs in Derbyshire with a population of around 128,000. The main centres of population are based around the market towns of Alfreton, Belper, Heanor and Ripley.  The Council has a demonstrable track record of sound financial management, achieving its savings targets and delivering a balanced budget and has a robust approach to its medium-term financial planning. It has not, however, been exempt from the financial challenge faced by local government in general and is therefore required to pursue a budget deficit reduction plan which is to be delivered by 31 March 2024.

For an informal discussion about this role and the opportunity it offers please contact David Fox, Financial Services Manager on 01773 841675.

In addition, we can offer:

  • Excellent personal and professional development opportunities
  • Free on-site parking

The closing date for this vacancy is Monday 31 January 2022 at Midnight

(Any applications received after the closing date will not be accepted)

The selection exercise for shortlisted candidates will take place Mid-February, with Presentation and formal interview taking place week commencing 21 February 2022.

CV’s are not accepted.
