The vision of Kent Police is for Kent to be a safe place for people to live, work and visit. By protecting the public from harm, we will allow our communities to flourish and by working with the public and partners, we will provide a first class policing service that is both visible and accessible. We will retain neighbourhood policing as the bedrock of policing in Kent. We will be there when the public need us and we will act with integrity in all that we do.

To help deliver on this vision, and ensure its continued outstanding rating, it is essential that we have a forward thinking and pioneering finance team that support this fully, ensuring we have an innovative approach, using resources wisely and strive to improve.

The Chief Accountant reports to the newly appointed Chief Finance Officer, and will be responsible for leading a team focused on setting, monitoring, and reporting on the capital and revenue budgets and leading on all accounting matters for Kent Police. This is a challenging role and requires you to lead the production of the annual Accounts to class leading standards and timescales, as well as co-ordinating the financial and management accounting functions for a £350m, complex public sector organisation. There is also an expectation to focus on continuous improvement and drive through a business partnering approach.

To be suitable for the role you need to be a driven and innovative fully qualified accountant who is able to demonstrate financial leadership in a complex organisation. Proven experience of playing a lead role in the close down of the statutory accounts is essential, as is the ability to confidently and successfully present complex financial information to others including at Board level. We are seeking to use your skills to develop our existing team further so you’re coaching, and mentoring skills will be brought into use too.

The role will offer flexibility in terms of place of work, including the potential to work from home for those who would like to. In the event that home working is agreed for the successful candidate, there will be a requirement to regularly attend Kent Police HQ, Northfleet on average one or two days a week, as agreed with the line manager.
