Accountant

3-year Fixed Term Contract

Fenland District Council is a rural District Council with big plans for its residents, communities and businesses. We are expanding our finance team and seeking a committed and highly motivated qualified or nearly-qualified accountant to help us deliver against those plans. With support from government, the County Council and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, we are delivering inspiring projects across the District bringing new economic opportunities for local communities and businesses whilst ensuring the Council remains financially resilient as we recover from the impact of the pandemic.  We are also taking a deep look at our own ways of working and implementing an organisation-wide transformation programme to deliver meaningful efficiencies and improvements in how we interact with our customers.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Accountant, you will be responsible for providing professional management accounting and financial reporting support to a range of services. You will have the opportunity to develop deep and meaningful relationships with our experienced and ambitious Heads of Service ensuring the Council fulfils its statutory functions whilst recognising the financial and budgetary impact of all decisions taken, whether they be operational or strategic. We are a small team so the postholder will also need to work closely with our in-house creditors, treasury, payroll and debtors functions to ensure a robust control environment remains in place and that financial awareness and understanding is embedded throughout the organisation.

The Council has recently established its own trading company, Fenland Future Ltd which has its own Board of Directors and is currently focussed on using Council-owned sites to deliver major housing schemes in the District. The postholder can expect to be involved with supporting the Directors to deliver their work programme whilst assisting with the preparation of the required regulatory submissions for the company.

Experience of working in, or with, a public sector organisation would be an advantage but is not considered essential. We would expect the postholder to have commenced or completed Level 4 studies (or equivalent), but we are open to supporting existing trainees to complete their current programme of study or to move on to a higher-level.  We are delighted that 95% of our staff have stated that they were proud to work for the Council and 98% state they feel they are able to make a positive contribution. Although we anticipate the postholder will initially need to work from our offices in March to fulfil some aspects of the role, we are proud to offer flexible and remote working across the organisation.

Informal enquiries about role should be sent to Neil Krajewski, Deputy Chief Accountant nkrajewski@fenland.gov.uk.

Closing date 19th November 2021.
