At Bromsgrove and Redditch Councils, we’re transforming our finances as part of an ambitious improvement and change programme. As our Senior Management Accountant in this exciting period of change, you’ll provide expert budget management advice to the business that will make a huge difference to local communities.

Your role

In this highly strategic role, you’ll work closely with the Financial Services Manager to manage and deliver reliable finances for both authorities. This will involve developing, promoting and maintaining strong financial policies, strategies, systems and practices, as well as managing the development and improvement of financial support services. You’ll also hold advisory workshops for people at all levels in both councils up to Heads of Services, on budget details, how to maximise resources and delivering value for money.

You’ll manage the councils’ treasury function and will also lead a team that delivers operational and strategic financial planning advice, monitors and supports service budgets, and contributes to corporate transformation projects. This includes supporting accurate budget-setting, assessing and interpreting the impact of new legislation on council service and accounting requirements, and overseeing grant claims. In short, you’ll play a key role in enabling the councils to improve people’s lives.

What you’ll need

With a proven background in financial management in the public sector, you’ll have experience of dealing with budget and service managers. Ideally studying for an intermediate or professional accounting qualification, you’ll also have the ability to link operational and financial data to financial planning. A confident communicator, you’ll have the ability to develop strong working relationships at all levels. You’ll also have the flexibility to explain the financial impacts of proposals to senior managers, and to simplify complex financial data for non-financial audiences.

With an analytical approach, you’ll be used to setting priorities, working on your own initiative and meeting tight deadlines. You’ll also be an inspirational leader, with the character to motivate your team to deliver results.
