We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified Accounting Technician to join our highly regarded Financial Operations Division in a permanent role in the Children’s Services & Skills Finance Team.

As a Senior Accounting Technician, you will play a key role in providing a range of financial, administrative and technical functions. You will work closely with your customers throughout the financial cycle to provide comprehensive financial advice and support, identify savings, help with the setting of budgets, perform monthly monitoring and forecasting through insightful analysis, and be a key part in the year-end closing processes.

The Children’s Services & Skills Finance Team provides support to a range of services, with Children, Education and Skills Development at the heart of everything we do. We are looking for someone with drive and a desire to help shape and improve financial management and support for our customers, many of whom are working on the front line to improve the lives of vulnerable individuals. The role will provide a challenging and varied opportunity for the successful candidate.

We are looking for someone with experience of working in a professional finance environment, including preparing budgets and monitoring, forecasting, analysing and reconciling complex data.

You will also have:

  • 5 GCSEs including Maths and English Language A*-C or 4-9 (or equivalent level 2 qualification)
  • Full membership MAAT (or equivalent)
  • Excellent IT skills with significant experience of using Excel (or equivalent) effectively and efficiently to analyse and interpret complex data
  • Strong numeracy, financial and analytical skills
  • Effective organisation skills and an ability to plan and prioritise your own work load
  • Strong communication / interpersonal skills

In return we can offer a varied role in a friendly team, which can span over numerous different SMBC and SCH sites across the borough in line with the Council’s Agile working policy. Working for Solihull means that we can offer employees a great working environment, together with a range of flexible, agile and home working options, attractive staff discounts and a career average pension scheme.

Our Financial Operations Division are proud of our proven track record of delivering an excellent service. Our approach to maintaining a three-year Medium Term Financial Strategy has been held up as good practice nationally and for a number of years we have achieved External Audit reports with no recommendations for improvement. We believe in investing in training and providing support for our staff to develop their careers.

Please contact Sarah Cheale (Senior Accountant - Children Services & Skills Finance Team) on 0121 704 6223 for an informal discussion.
