About us

The Local Government Association works to promote and improve local government, shaping national policy on behalf of councils. We are a political, cross-party, politician-led organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils, so they are able to deliver local solutions to national problems.

The role

Local government provides vital, local and highly valued services, ranging from social care to fixing potholes to taking care of parks. Councils are consistently more trusted than central government to make decisions that affect their local areas.

With the pressures on local authorities increasing, the need to embark on a post pandemic economic recovery, more reliance on locally raised income which has decreased due to COVID-19 and potential major reforms of the local government finance system, there has never been more at stake for councils.

Councils need a sustainable long-term financial foundation so they can continue to support local residents. Now is a crucial time to make the case for local government funding, nurture relationships with central government and share knowledge with member councils and other partners about local government’s and our vital work.

As part of your role, you will be right at the centre of the LGA's analytical and policy work with local government, working within the local government finance policy team. Collaborating with colleagues across the breadth of our policy work, as well with local and central government, your role will be to deliver high quality financial, analytical and policy advice to support the LGA's policy programme on local government finance, as well as financial aspects of other policy areas.

This is a real opportunity both to raise your profile and to demonstrate your co-operative working strengths, with a particular focus on the funding of local government.

The requirements

We are looking for a candidate whose skill set will enable them to be an effective lobbyist and advocate, championing and furthering the interests of local government and helping councils to respond to challenges making the most of opportunities.

It is essential that the candidate has strong analytical and Excel skills that can be used to assess the financial implications of central government policy on councils. This is not about accounting, but problem solving, and just as important is the ability to respond and adapt to a quickly changing environment and political context, learn on the job and think creatively about risks and opportunities that are presented to you within the role. Your ability to grasp issues and new concepts quickly will make you stand out. You will also need a good understanding of how local government is funded and the key issues affecting councils.

It’s important that you’re politically sensitive with the ability to exercise discretion and judgement when dealing with politicians and officers at every level. This will be complemented by good presentation and research skills.

The LGA is based in Westminster. Currently, all colleagues work from home as the office is temporarily closed due to COVID-19. Following the reopening of the office, this would be an office-based role. The LGA operates a generous flexible working policy.

You must have the right to work in the UK. The LGA is unfortunately not able to offer sponsorship visas. Evidence for the right to work in the UK will be requested at the interview stage.

Closing date: 5pm, Monday 7 June 2021

Interviews:     W/C Monday 28 June 2021, interviews will be held remotely

As a Disability Confident Leader, the LGA values diversity and encourages applications from all sections of the community
