Senior Finance Analysts at NHS England and NHS Improvement include finance professionals, management consultants and economists and come from a range of backgrounds including the health sector, professional services firms, large commercial organisations and regulatory bodies. They bring to the role critical thinking, strong evaluation and report writing capabilities, the experience to question financial assumptions and the ability to draw conclusions from complex analysis. If you wish to challenge yourself and make a positive impact in patient care, whilst also benefiting from a healthy work life balance, our Senior Finance Analyst posts within Provider Development may be the opportunity for you.

Provider Development

The Provider Development directorate includes two teams: Provider Transformation and Provider Policy, who work with regional teams, local health systems and the provider sector to ensure that we have strong and successful providers, working collaboratively within strong and successful systems, in the best interests of local patients, populations and staff. The Provider Transformation team works closely with regional teams across the areas of:

  • Diligence and assurance of complex high-risk mergers and other transactions;
  • Supporting NHS providers and systems to diagnose the challenges facing them and to develop and deliver solutions for sustainable services (such as via joint management across trusts, developing and implementing provider collaborative arrangements or developing strategic options for unsustainable providers); and
  • Developing the future provider landscape, for example designing new organisational forms to support greater collaboration; and
  • Overseeing the financial sustainability of independent sector providers of hard to replace NHS services.

The role

As a Senior Finance Analyst, you will support Senior Managers by leading on the finance workstream of projects, as well as the analysis of non-financial information, for example data sets related to policy or patient benefits. You will be able to scope and undertake risk-based analysis and present findings in written reports in a logical and convincing way that is tailored to senior audiences. You will have experience of designing bespoke analysis, including specifying the information which will be required, exercising judgement on complex issues related to finance and other metrics in NHS providers and be comfortable dealing with ambiguity. Analytical work could cover diagnosis, solutions development, assurance and oversight at provider and systems level.

Our approach is based on team and project working using a pool-based resourcing model; this enables people to broaden their experience and develop their careers, by working on different types of projects and with different people across the Directorate, combined with the benefits of having an individual based line management approach.

Although based in Skipton House (London), team members are currently working remotely from home. We anticipate returning to office from June, most likely based on a hybrid model of working, combining home working and office-based working. There will be some travel to visit different providers as part of the role.

What we are looking for

You will be a qualified accountant or have an equivalent level of experience of working in a specialist area such as those set out in the next paragraph. You will have experience of delivering an insightful point of view from data and the ability to present analysis and information in formal reports in a clear and logical way for a senior management or Board level audience.

In the past, successful candidates have had experience of undertaking analysis to support complex organisational change, due diligence work, assessing business cases or working in strategy, governance, mergers and acquisitions, transaction services or similar. We welcome applicants with alternative, relevant experience.

And in return

Provider Transformation is a friendly and supportive team, and we are committed to supporting team and personal development. NHSE/I supports a range of flexible working patterns and aims to achieve a positive work-life balance while delivering an ambitious agenda.
