The provision of good services by Councils to the local community has never been more needed or more challenging. Local Authorities are desperately in need of great and innovative leadership; and this new interim assignment to manage and improve a number of key services as the existing leadership has to refocus on the specific challenges of the pandemic is no exception.

We’re looking for someone with a background of improvement delivery in Local Government as well as the ability to keep services operating smoothly and meeting their goals. You are likely to be someone who has significant experience leading and improving council services; ideally in a number of disciplines. With services as diverse as Passenger Transport and Revenues and Benefits likely to come under your remit, your knowledge of council structures and obligations, and your leadership of teams will come to the fore. Expertise in one particular area is helpful but not essential; experience leading one or more council services is essential.

Your background may have been in councils alone, but we would also welcome candidates who have helped provide or improve services either as a Programme Director focused on delivery, or on behalf of commissioned consulting firms. Either way however, a key part of the role is navigate the nuances of local government management so this is not a role for anyone other than those highly familiar with the sector.

The role is likely to be assessed as in scope of IR35 as a result of the management responsibilities, although this assessment has yet to be undertaken and may change. Remote working is obviously in palce currently; some availability to be on site may be required as and when restrictions allow.
