The Council has high expectations for the future and is working with local partners and local communities to ensure we deliver our exciting ambition for what the Borough will be like by 2050.

The council are seeking to recruit a Senior Auditor to join their highly regarded, energetic, creative and supportive Internal Audit team on a full time, permanent basis. The team gained the Institute of Internal Audit’s top grade in their most recent External Quality Assessment.

Your new role
As a Senior Auditor, you will provide a high quality, independent, objective internal audit service to our three client organisations that adds value as well as helps ensure their business is managed both efficiently and cost effectively. As a Senior Auditor, you will undertake planned audits using a risk-based approach, lead on delivering aspects of the audit plan,  deliver more complex audit work and support the Head of Internal Audit and Audit Managers in providing on the spot challenge and support for services around risks and controls as processes and arrangements are developed. You will audit all aspects of our clients' business and the post will require you to effectively identify potential risks to delivering a system or service, evaluate a system or process, identify the key controls and an appropriate testing strategy to provide assurance over them, as well as draft and agree your own reports with senior management. You will also be expected to support the Audit Managers with team management and staff development.

As you continue to develop and thrive professionally, you will keep striving to explore new ways of improving our approach to audit and associated working practices.

What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will need to be an experienced and self-sufficient auditor, who has a sound understanding of risk, control and governance. You must be able to apply objectivity and independence to the work whilst also seeking to develop good working relationships with clients, utilising a flexible approach that ensures audits are relevant to their service, taking care to deliver high quality audits to the highest standards of accuracy, on budget and within agreed deadlines, with appropriate Audit Manager support. You need to be able to effectively co-ordinate, check and challenge the audit work of colleagues or contractors, to ensure it is ready for review before being given to the Audit Manager.

Effective communication, committing to and demonstrating our organisation’s values and behaviours is essential for this role, as you will be liaising with the Council’s internal and external stakeholders. Internal audit experience is essential for this role and it will be advantageous if that experience is within a Local Government setting. Full and current membership of AAT, or part qualified with current membership of IIA, CIPFA, ACCA, ICA (or equivalent) is essential. We will also consider contributing to the repayment of fees to your current employer, if you still have commitments arising from study provided by them.

What you'll get in return
If you join the Council you will enjoy a range of benefits including: flexible working, salary sacrifice scheme and excellent training and development opportunities. A full list of benefits provided by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council can be found on the Jobs at the council web page under the "Why Work for us Tab".
