Now is the right time to take on this role at Newcastle-under-Lyme Council. You’ll join a newly structured corporate services team, and report directly to the Chief Executive – taking on the role of S151 Officer for the council. You’ll have the space and the autonomy to make your mark, in an organisation that is open to change, and where the culture is focused on empowerment, innovation and effectiveness. You’ll set the tone for a high performing Finance function that is closely aligned to the Council’s strategic priorities, and plays a central enabling role in translating strategic intention into delivery plans. There is a growing appetite for the organisation to adopt a more commercial approach, and you will ensure that professional advice and a robust appraisal of potential risk and reward supports effective decision-making.

We expect that you will already have financial management experience within a similar setting, and it’s likely that you will currently be fulfilling a Deputy S151 role. You should offer a sophisticated understanding of how to lead through influence and collaboration – getting the best from those around you, and fostering positive relationships across all parts of the organisation. It’s essential that you have a depth of technical accounting and financial expertise, but we are also looking for someone who can see the strategic context behind the numbers and who can identify creative approaches that support corporate ambitions.
