Borough Market has a long and distinguished history as a wholesale and retail fruit and vegetable market. It is London’s oldest food market. It was established on the south bank of the Thames around 1,000 years ago. Borough Market has occupied its present site for just over 250 years.

It was formally registered as a charity (076940) in the Charity Commission’s records, on 6th August 1999. The main charitable purpose of its Board of Trustees is the holding of a market. The Board has a duty to manage the activities of the Market and its investments efficiently and to bring about the regeneration and refurbishment of the Market and its estate.

Trustees are required to attend all full Board meetings, which are usually held every other month during the evening at the Borough Market offices. Additionally, trustees are expected to take part in sub-committees and working groups and to attend Board member away days.

During 2019-2020, we aim to recruit more trustees and to have a balanced board that reflects our activities and the community in which the market operates. Between them, trustees have the range of skills and experience necessary for the effective running of the organisation.

We are looking for people who can demonstrate real enthusiasm and love of the market, a desire to make a difference and give back to the community. Trustees need to act as a ‘critical friend’ (providing ‘checks and balances’) and be committed to supporting the Market in its ambition to be the best in the world. Preference will be given to candidates that live within the local area. We are looking for trustees with high level skills and experience at board level. Although not essential, we would be keen to recruit individuals with a background in strategic finance, accounting, law, academic or food policy.
