Technical Accountant Job Description:

The Technical Accountant is a key role in the Finance Directorate, with responsibility for supporting the Head of Financial Accounts to oversee and manage the financial accounting team, to provide expertise in complex technical areas including cash-flow forecasting, capital accounting, VAT, and to support the production of the statutory annual accounts, ensuring the application of financial reporting standards.

This role is responsible for the provision of a high quality capital accounting service including management reporting, technical advice, IFRS-based asset accounting, the development of the Fixed Asset Register and support for the external audit. The role works closely with capital budget managers and the strategic finance team around both the in-year programme and future years’ financial planning.

The key elements of the role include:

  • Managing the capital accounting of the Trust and advise on all aspects of capital. Maintain an accurate and up to date asset register, monitor expenditure on all capital schemes, manage depreciation journals and reconcile the asset register on a regular basis
  • Leading a team of three colleagues and work collaboratively with other finance teams and budget managers
  • Leading on the monthly and annual statutory accounts and  lead on the external audit in relation to capital

Technical Accountant Person Specification:

The Technical Accountant role requires a CCAB qualified accountant or a professional with 3+ years of financial accounting experience. It is essential that this person has knowledge of financial and accounting procedures, financial reporting standards and is technically competent with good accounting and analytical skills.

This person will also have experience in the preparation of the statutory annual accounts process, managing capital accounting processes, as well as planning, monitoring and reporting using asset management systems.

You do not need to have NHS experience to be considered for this role, however, experience auditing or working in capital accounting in a large, complex organisations is essential. Experience of managing and leading others is also a requirement
