Play a vital role in keeping the nation safe

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is proud to support the nation’s security. Whether responding to a state-based threat, ensuring we are prepared for a cyber attack or developing battle-ready technology, we work innovatively to protect British people, our borders and our assets. While our frontline forces are among the best in the world, the dynamic support network that underpins their activities is an essential part of our military’s excellent reputation – and it is here that you could join us in an instrumental role.

This is a multi-layered and high-profile position, in which you will take responsibility for various priority areas. Producing the MOD’s annual report, annual assurance report and accounts, you will build relationships with the National Audit Office (NAO) and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), seeing to it that emerging issues are tackled efficiently, and that expected standards are being met. Contributing extensively to the department’s improvement programme and banking modernisation initiatives, you will ensure our financial accounting policies are in line with national and international standards, and you will enhance our cash forecasting capabilities. Taking the lead in implementing IFRS16 (Leases), you will expand the reach of the Cross Government Technical Accounting Centre of Excellence. You will also lead the Treasury Management team and all associated programmes, and you will lead the Central Tax team. Across every aspect of this role, you will provide comprehensive guidance and advice to your colleagues, sharing expert knowledge with the overall aim of raising standards wherever possible.

This is a unique opportunity to join a team whose input ultimately affects frontline operations and activities. We work flexibly to meet the changing needs of our armed forces, so to excel in this fast-paced role, you will be comfortable contributing to a period of transformational change. As a senior-level qualified Accountant, you will be an inspirational leader who knows how to get the best out of the team and stakeholders. With regular contact with key personnel across the MOD finance community and beyond, you will have excellent communication and influencing skills. With a background in managing complex financial accounting issues, you will have experience of delivering process and control improvements. Crucially, you will be enthused by the opportunity to apply sound financial management to a large asset base that has a complex working capital.

This is an exciting chance to put your skills to the test in a dynamic yet collaborative environment. We champion diversity and will support your long-term career ambitions with training and development prospects, so you can be sure of a progressive and welcoming team spirit. As a large global workforce with excellent networking opportunities, there is plenty of scope to get involved in a wide range of career-defining projects – all enhanced by a competitive benefits package and a good work/life balance.
