We are immersed in an exciting period of change. At the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) our work ranges from supporting the UK’s world-leading food, farming and fishing industries to protecting the environment and providing robust defences against natural threats. Leaving the EU will fundamentally transform the work we do and how we deliver it. We are embracing this opportunity to become even more efficient, focused and innovative. Join us, and you will be at the heart of this change - helping us to secure a more sustainable future for the UK.

As a key member of the Finance business partnering team, you will be involved in a wealth of important EU Exit-related activities and plans. You will:

  • See to it that finance remains at the heart of every decision by offering insightful analysis to Ministers, Directors, Senior Managers, Non-Executive Directors and officials.
  • Ensure the group is complying with relevant financial requirements and guidelines, producing monthly reports and taking on budget profiling and quarterly forecasting exercises.
  • Lead on the production of Director and Deputy Directors’ financial reports, sharing your findings with colleagues at monthly meetings.
  • Take responsibility for a specific business area, reporting on EU Exit expenditure and associated staffing and payroll costs. You will also gather information relating to month end journals, with your resulting analysis of monthly outcomes identifying issues that need to be resolved.
  • Support a variety of challenges such as assisting with the development of business cases, taking on monthly cash management forecasts, monitoring the Evidence team’s budget and reporting on a Treasury ring-fenced budget, processing the associated payments and reconciliations.

This stimulating role requires a lateral thinker, so you will be keen to share alternative perspectives and explore new angles.  With excellent numerical capabilities, you will have experience in a finance business partnering or financial management role, and you will have outstanding negotiation and communication skills. Resilient with good inner composure, you will have plenty of initiative and enjoy working as part of a team, and you will have the capacity to translate complex financial data into easy-to-understand information. On a technical level, you will be confident in your ability to analyse and present financial or commercial information, and you will have hands-on experience of identifying problems and providing solutions. With experience of budget management, planning and forecasting, you will proficient in Excel, and applying financial guidelines, rules and governance standards.

Everyone in Defra is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. You will have access to learning and development from quality providers and support from mentors and coaches. We offer flexible working alongside a range of other policies and schemes to support your physical and emotional wellbeing. Our comprehensive benefits offer includes generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.
