Job Details

Unique opportunity for an adventurous accountant (CPFA - or equivalent) looking to gain international experience  and build the financial management capacity of this inspiring education NGO in Vietnam.

Based in Hoi An, our partner is a small organization providing education to deaf and hard of hearing children. Started as a small initiative, they have grown unexpectedly over time as more and more parents brought their children to be registered and receive education from them, the only institution who would accept deaf children and provide suitable educational services.

They have a very basic accounting system, working on a spreadsheet in Excel – they have never made a report and don’t have written financial procedures. Their team have not studied accounting, and would benefit from training to help them streamline processes and make better use of their efforts and time.

Your Role

You will begin with an internal review of their existing systems, procedures and controls. You will be identifying gaps and implementing your recommendations for best practice, in line with their needs, context and capacity of local staff. Our partner has requested especially support in using Excel – improving the system and templates, training in creating budgets and drawing reports from it, to present to stakeholders.

This broad and wide-ranging assignment is a great opportunity for accountants thinking about a career move to the international development sector to get an extensive insight in just a couple of weeks.

Company

Accounting for International Development (AfID) offers every type of accountant, from anywhere in the world the opportunity to use their skills to support a broad range of non-profit organisations globally. Volunteer assignments of between 2 weeks and 12 months, &/or longer permanent placements, form part of our ongoing strategy to build the financial management capacity of charities in over 50 countries.

AfID have now arranged assignments for over 1000 accountants from over 50 countries, providing over 250,000 hours of one to one support to more than 500 non-profit partners.

Our partners, which are a blend of international charities and grassroot NGOs, such as street child centres, hospitals, micro-finance institutions, conservation projects, women’s empowerment programmes and schools, are all doing amazing work to tackle extreme poverty and inequality but due to limited resources are unable to access vital financial management training.

The main focus of all AfID assignments is to develop the skills, confidence and potential of local people, enabling organisations to ultimately have the financial management capacity they need to deliver more sustainable programmes to their many beneficiaries, whilst maintaining good relations with their donors. Volunteers could be budgeting with a street child centre in Kampala (Uganda), coaching a hospital bookkeeper in Kigali (Rwanda) or financial reporting for a primary school in Kathmandu (Nepal).
