Service Financial Adviser (Finance Manager)

The London Borough of Merton, situated in South West London, covers commercial centres such as Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon. The population of the borough is over 200,000. The council has a revenue budget of £151m in 2017/18 and employs over 5000 staff. 18% of the borough is open space with over 65 parks including Wimbledon and Mitcham Commons. Merton plays host to one of the world’s most famous sporting events – the Wimbledon fortnight held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
The post holder will provide support and financial reporting for the corporate services department. This will include supporting the legal shared services function which covers five boroughs, including Merton as the host. The key responsibilities will include budget preparation and monitoring, working closely with Directors and service managers ensuring that they are provided with invaluable decision making support. You will also manage the year end process for the department and have responsibility for ad hoc projects that relate to your areas of control. You will have direct responsibility for two Senior Accountants and their development.
The successful candidate will be a fully qualified accountant and have a deep understanding of budget setting and management reporting. Strong management accounting skills are essential and you must be able to provide information in a clear and meaningful manner. You may have worked in local government but applications from candidates who have worked in another public service area or commerce would be welcome. You must be able to demonstrate that you are proactive, committed to adding value and dedicated to improving systems and processes to deliver a first class service to budget holders.
