About Us

Do you want to be part of Reading’s Future Finance Function? Do you have what it takes to tackle the Council’s financial challenges?

Reading Borough Council is rebuilding its finance service to deliver a function that is flexible, adaptable and respected. The service aims to be proactive and innovative in tackling the Council’s finances on multiple fronts. So far, the Council has prepared a robust and challenging Medium Term Financial Strategy, which requires £40 million of savings to be delivered over the next three years. The Council is also seeking to improve the management and delivery of its capital programme, including further additions to its exciting business and housing investment portfolio. Furthermore, the Council wants to be innovative and exploit its commercial potential.

The Role

The role of Strategic Business Partner will be key to strengthening the Finance Team itself, and will play a pivotal role in the new finance function. The Council needs four seasoned professionals (including one for an 18 month fixed term appointment) to undertake these significantly redesigned posts. While each job description is the same, the roles will vary depending on the directorate that is being supported: Environment and Neighbourhood Services; Children’s, Education and Early Help Services; Adult Care and Health Services; Corporate Resources (18 month FTC). Each Strategic Business Partner will have a fantastic opportunity, as well as challenge, to create a new and high-performing team that will drive high standards of support to each director and their management teams.

These posts are not for the faint-hearted; you will need to be resilient, have strong accounting knowledge with experience of deploying it extensively. To make progress fast you will need to show that you can think creatively, initiate new ideas and drive them through. If you think that you can manage the challenge and potential of one of these roles, then we would love to hear from you.
