Following a re-structure, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a post within the Accountancy team at Newport City Council.  Reporting to the Strategic Finance Business Partner (SFBP) and responsible leading and managing a team of Finance Business Partners, this post will support the SFBP  by also have a reporting relationship with the Directors & Heads of Service within the ‘People’ directorate, which includes one of the largest and most challenging budget areas of the Council in Adults and Children’s services.  This post will also work on regional groups as needed.

It provides genuine significant scope to further develop your career, both professionally and personally. The postholder will: 

  • Have oversight of the Finance Business partnering team maintaining strong performance, delivery of objectives and standards and competencies are maintained. Staff training and development needs are addressed and staff moral and motivation remains buoyant.
  • Lead, or play a senior finance critical supporting role, on projects or programmes, commissioning appropriate resource where required. 
  • Attend, as required, various Council and outside body Committees, Working Parties and other Groups.
  • Undertake appropriate development work as required in response to changing financial regimes, new government legislation and initiatives and to determine the financial implications of policy changes/decisions.
  • Provide financial support to Budget and Service Managers and other staff involved in financial transactions to enable tight budgetary control.
  • Ensure officers, management teams and members are provided with high quality strategic advice and direction to make well-informed decisions that will have a financial impact on the Council.
  • Ensure that all regular finance processes/tasks are completed consistently and in line with the operating model in place across the Council.
  • Deputising for the SFBP as required
