Business and Financial Analyst

Location: London

Salary: £48,720 to £58,464 (dependent upon experience)

Hours: Full time

As a Business and Financial Analyst at the CMA, you will work closely with economists and legal advisers in multi-disciplinary teams, examining a wide range of markets, analysing financial information, assessing varied business strategies and how parties fit into the market. This will include engaging with businesses in the relevant markets and asking the right questions.

Your detailed analysis will play an important role in identifying harmful competitive effects and developing remedies that will make markets work better for businesses and consumers. In the recent past the role has involved:

  • Assessing the profitability of a pharmaceutical product as part of a Competition Act case which led to the CMA’s largest ever fine.
  • Assessing the profitability of large retail banks and energy companies as part of our recent market investigations in these sectors, leading to remedies which aim to improve outcomes for consumers.
  • Performing industry background research into the food retail and wholesale sectors to inform decision makers in a UK-wide merger investigation.
  • Modelling the financial incentives for new suppliers to enter a recently liberalised market, as part of a regulatory case.

Providing analysis on merger, market, regulatory and Competition Act inquiries, this role will suit an individual who strives to create and apply the best solutions across several high-profile areas, making a real difference to both businesses and consumers.

The successful candidate will have relevant analytical and interpretive experience, supported by a first degree with 2:1 honours (or international equivalent) and a postgraduate accounting qualification (e.g. ACCA, CIMA, CFA) or MBA, OR equivalent experience, with some familiarity with economics and financial theory. Previous successful applicants have come from professional services firms, consultancies, other government departments and the NAO.

We offer excellent career development opportunities and generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, 25 days’ annual leave (increasing to 30 days over five years), favourable consideration of flexible working, generous maternity / paternity provision, childcare vouchers and interest-free season ticket loans or cycle to work scheme.
