Financial Accountant (Investments)
The Financial Accountant (Investments) is a new post arising from the restructure of the Finance Operations Accounting team. It sits within the newly-created Investments Accounting Team and is the technical specialist for all accounting matters relating to investments (an extremely diverse £7bn portfolio), as well as taking an over-arching role in driving technical excellence in accounting and external reporting across the National Church Institutions (NCIs). The role has particular responsibility for statutory accounting for the Church Commissioners and its subsidiaries.
Running 25% of English primary schools; responsible for 45% of Grade 1 listed buildings, three world heritage sites and some of our most popular tourist attractions; the largest private commercial forestry investor in the UK; a thought-leader in ethical investment; and one of the largest charitable givers in the country – just a few facts you might not have known about this unique institution. With a network of parishes across the country, and regular attendance of nearly a million people, the Church of England is a hugely complex and diverse organisation maintaining a Christian presence at the heart of our communities and playing an active role in the life of our nation.
At a time of significant and ambitious change across the Church of England, the Finance & Resources team is seeking exceptional candidates to play a key role in delivering best practice and sharing expertise not just for the benefit of the National Church Institutions but for the wider church as well.
You will likely be an Audit Manager or current Senior Financial Accountant with excellent technical accounting ability combined with strong communication skills; you will be someone who proactively looks for ways to add value, is able to see the bigger picture and takes pride in delivering a high quality consistent service. In addition to this, the successful applicant for this specific post will need to be a fully qualified accountant (ACA or equivalent) with considerable financial accounting experience; and hold a strong logical/personal motivation to work for the Church of England.
For this post, you will:
- take the lead in delivering technical excellence in financial accounting across the National Church Institutions, working collaboratively and communicating effectively with other colleagues to drive best practice;
- be the technical specialist for all investment accounting, leading on all financial accounting policies and processes relating to accounting for investment assets across a complex investment fund of more than £7bn;
- have previous experience of preparing financial statements for an appropriately varied investment portfolio; or demonstrate technical competence and understanding in this area (referring to experience gained whilst working in audit for example)
