The Finance Business Partner – Shared Services is a new post arising from the restructure of the Finance Operations Accounting team. It sits within the newly-created Charity Accounting Team and takes primary responsibility for delivering management and financial accounting for Church of England Central Services (ChECs), which exists to provide cost effective shared services (including Finance, Communications, HR, IT etc.) to the National Church Institutions (NCIs) and to an increasing degree the wider Church.

Running 25% of English primary schools; responsible for 45% of Grade 1 listed buildings, three world heritage sites and some of our most popular tourist attractions; the largest private commercial forestry investor in the UK; a thought-leader in ethical investment; and one of the largest charitable givers in the country – just a few facts you might not have known about this unique institution.  With a network of parishes across the country, and regular attendance of nearly a million people, the Church of England is a hugely complex and diverse organisation maintaining a Christian presence at the heart of our communities and playing an active role in the life of our nation.

At a time of significant and ambitious change across the Church of England, the Finance & Resources team is seeking exceptional candidates to play a key role in delivering best practice and sharing expertise not just for the benefit of the NCIs but for the wider church as well.

You will act as Finance Business Partner for the shared services functions, providing financial support fostering a culture of financial accountability and cost efficiency, so the Church can maximise the resources available for its front-line charitable activities. In addition to internal reporting, you will also have primary responsibility for the statutory reporting requirements of ChECs and its trading subsidiary.

The successful applicant will proactively identify ways to add value; be able to see the bigger picture and take pride in delivering a high quality, consistent service. In addition to this, the successful applicant will need to be a fully qualified accountant (ACA or equivalent), demonstrating excellent technical finance expertise; and hold a strong logical/personal motivation to work for the Church of England.

For this post, you will:

  • be predominantly focussed (c.80%) on providing internal reporting, financial planning and decision support to senior managers across the shared services departments, but you will also be responsible for producing the statutory  accounts for year end and dealing with the external auditors;
  • need a proven track record of accurately analysing large amounts of complex data, and producing innovative reporting and insight to add value/drive better decisions;
  • be credible and able to become the effective, trusted advisor to key stakeholders, both for business as usual requirements and for key transformation projects.
